In order to facilitate greater labour mobility, English should be introduced as an official secondary work language, allowing all Europeans to be hired even if they do not speak the local language (yet). This does not give an unfair advantage to e.g. British citizens, as the local languages are not being replaced. We remain short of a completed single market that guarantees the four freedoms. Language remains an often ignored barrier to achieving freedom of movement. English as a second language in professional environments therefore makes sense. Let us bear in mind however, that large numbers of Europeans do not speak English. This proposal would therefore go hand in hand with - or at least be supported by - the increasing instruction of English as a second language across the EU.
Introducing this new standard will make employers less likely to discriminate against potential foreign employers and allow people out of work to migrate to other European countries, where their skills and talents just may be in demand at the moment.
