World Car Free Day is in September each year & is a very effective way of raising awareness about how the quality of life for everyone can be improved significantly by freeing up urban space for walking, cycling, public transport & fun community activities in general. This helps encourage a modal shift away from cars & towards active travel, with positive outcomes for air quality & public health. Also helps create a better eco identity for Eastbourne. Eastbourne is far too dependent upon the car for getting across the town, which experiences frequent traffic congestion and episodes of dangerously high air poillution.
The Transport Group of the Eastbourne Eco Action Network is actively organising some street closures in the town for World Car Free Day on September 22nd. People can help by submitting ideas, or offering help, to the Transport Group about activities that could take place in the closed-off streets. Just go to https://ecoactioneb.co.uk/action/transport-group and join up to the Transport Group.
Here's a great video showing how urgent the need is to reduce our dependency upon cars: https://www.bbc.co.uk/ideas/videos/viewpoint-cars-should-come-with-health-warnings/p08s48hr?playlist=sustainable-thinking
Car Free Day should be every day not once a year.
Congrats to Eastbourne District Council for closing 6 roads in yesterday to mark World Car Free Day 2020. This is a significant breakthrough in raising awareness locally about the need to reduce the stranglehold of the car upon Eastbourne.
