The communities who have emitted the fewest greenhouse gas emissions are the ones on the frontline of the climate crisis. We have a responsibility to protect those fleeing from rapidly decertifying sub-Saharan states or submerging Pacific island nations and grant asylum, just as we would in the case of political persecution.
The people of the Pacific Islands contribute less than 1% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions yet face the threat of sea level rise, storm surges and coastal erosion. Most are predicted to submerge completely by 2100. We must ensure that Pacific Islanders’ rights to life, liberty and security of person are protected in the face of a problem they did not even create by granting asylum.
